At Yaya, we looked through a collection of collage artists, focusing primarily on the Kenyan Born Artist Wangechi Mutu for inspiration for our first class ‘Inverted Self Portraits’. The students were asked to rake through stacks and stacks of printed images, all of which were donated from the St. Roch community business owners of New Orleans (thanks to St. Coffee, Conrad’s Junk Shop, Birdie’s Cafe, the Healing Center, and Stephanie Mezynski for all the donated materials). Then the cutting began… We started looking for eyes, ears, noses and mouths, finding images that resonated as facial features in the New York Times, Gambits, and Architectural Digest.
